After the long winters in Michigan, there is one place our family dreams of returning to every year. Florida. Every spring we pack up and head south to the Clearwater area. It has become a tradition that has lasted for nearly ten years. It is more than a vacation. It is a reunion, a reset, and a reminder of everything we love.
We get to visit family, spend time with Brian, Debbie, Anna, and Emma, and reconnect with lifelong friends like Carlos and his family. Over the years we have found our favorite corners of paradise. We have discovered small restaurants that feel like home and learned which beaches let us slip away from the spring break crowds for a more local feel.
Gulf Boulevard stretches down the coast through Madeira Beach and beyond. We have walked it, biked it, and driven it many times just to take in the breeze and the view. We have spent mornings fishing the intercoastal, chasing sheepshead, flounder, and sea trout while dreaming about how great it would be to fill our freezer each month with fresh fish if we lived closer.
Our favorite routine is simple. Every morning that we can, Sarah and I drive to Indian Rocks Beach before the sun rises. The sand is cool, the air is calm, and the beach is nearly empty except for a few seabirds waiting for the day to begin. As the sun lifts, everything changes. The water starts to glow, dolphins appear in the distance, and the whole world feels alive again.
I love watching Sarah smile during our walks. That smile drives me crazy in the best way. Seeing her smile is all I need. Those quiet moments with her, with the sound of the waves and the sunrise painting the sky, remind me how lucky we are to share this life together.
We hold hands with our toes in the sand and our hearts feel full. Those mornings remind us that happiness does not need to be loud or complicated. It is found in the small things, the warmth of the sun, the sound of waves, and sharing it all with someone you love.
We often talk about the future and dream about being snowbirds one day. Spending a few months each year soaking in the Gulf sunshine sounds perfect. Personally, I would love to be tan all year round. After a Michigan winter filled with gray skies and bare trees, that first breath of salty air feels like coming back to life. The colors, the warmth, and even the palm trees, which I always hug the moment we arrive, light me up inside.
When winter sets in up north, we start the countdown all over again. The memories keep us going, the plans give us something to look forward to, and the thought of that first sunrise back on the beach keeps our fire burning.
At All Day Fire Outfitters, we believe that everyone needs something that lights their fire. Something that keeps your soul warm when the seasons change. For us, it is the beaches of Madeira, Fort De Soto, and Indian Rocks. Watching the earth wake up together and feeling that spark inside that says this is where I belong.
Until we are back under the palms, we will keep dreaming, planning, and finding our fires wherever we are.
